Today's Inspiration

The inspiration for our first Movement Mantra stems from the song “A Life That’s Good” (from the Nashville Soundtrack) that I often play during a savasana as a way to get people to reflect inwards and understand that no matter how difficult things get, there is always a way to find the good in our lives.

I first thought of this song while preparing a lecture on wellness to undergraduate exercise science students; it seemed to resonate with them, and to this day I still find it as a powerful reminder and inspiration for us all.

The Mantra

At the end of the day....I have a life that's good

The mantra “A Life that is Good” felt very right and fitting at a time when our world is experiencing a health pandemic (COVID-19) like we have never before experienced. We at GDY have had to shut our doors in an effort to minimize contamination risk and follow the CDC recommendations of groups of 10 or less.

Every human is being affected in some way – whether it be the loss of a job, the requirement to work from home, schools sending children home, or actual contamination of COVID-19. So in these times of unknown it seems needed for us to reflect on what it is that makes our lives meaningful and good.

Today’s Movement Mantra doesn’t have you physically moving through an asana practice, but instead, gives you an opportunity to meditate and journal. It allows you to be creative, and look within. As yoga teaches us, sometimes the most important thing you can do is look within in stillness.

Sittin’ here tonight
By the fire light
It reminds me I already have
More than I should

I don’t need fame
No one to know my name
At the end of the day, Lord I pray
I have a life that’s good

Two arms around me
Heaven to ground me
And a family that always calls me home

Four wheels to get there
Enough love to share
And a sweet, sweet, sweet song

At the end of the day
Lord I pray
I have a life that’s good

Sometimes I’m hard on me
When dreams don’t come easy
I wanna look back and say
I did all that I could

Yeah at the end of the day
Lord I pray
I have a life that’s good

Two arms around me
Heaven to ground me
And a family that always calls me home

Four wheels to get there
Enough love to share
And a sweet, sweet, sweet song

At the end of the day
Lord I pray
I have a life that’s good
At the end of the day Lord I pray
I have a life that’s good

Apply this to your life

Research has shown that taking time to write out what we are grateful for and reflecting on that daily can impact and change our mindset. This journaling activity gives you the chance to do just that.

This is your time for you, take as much or as little as you need within each component of the activity. If you must, leave and come back. There is no right or wrong way to do this journaling activity, it’s about what makes you feel good.

Journaling Activity

  1. Listen to this song
  2. Listen to the song again (okay, maybe that’s overkill, but I often times need that pick me up)
  3. Pull out something to write on/in and write down 5 things that make your life good.
    1. Finish your writing with the sentiment “At the end of the day, I have a life that’s good”
  4. Find a way to creatively display these items in a way that makes you feel better
    1. Go digital with Canva
    2. Draw a picture
    3. Create a collage
    4. Write a poem
    5. Take pictures
    6. Find something creative that inspires you
  5. Put this in a place that you can see it or refer pack to it (maybe take a picture and put it on your phone) so when you spiral out of control with doomsday thoughts, you can be reminded of those things that make your life good.
